The Henneberg ruins were the ancestral seat of the Counts of Henneberg. The Hainaut once extended over almost all of Thiringen and part of Hesse. In the early Middle Ages, the Counts of Henneberg were marshals of the German Emperors and of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation. Henneberg Castle, which lies south-east of Meiningen, was destroyed during the construction War. Like the other castles around Meiningen, the flabichtsburg on the Frankfurter Handelsstrasse, Landsberg Castle, and Mauerschädel Castle near Helmershausen. Landsberg Castle was rebuilt in 1860.
